Hi all;
I know not related to pen turning but thought I would ask any way. Was turning a 3x3x3 block of hackberry last night for a bowl I drilled the pilot hole with my bit for 3/8 dowels and as I was cutting the tennon the bowl came off the wood worm screw. The hole is now to big. Maybe it was 2 big in the first place?? [:I] I've thought about attaching it to my cole jaws, but since it is a solid block of wood; don't know if that is a good idea or not. [?] I tried wrapping some paper towel around the screw but it won't grab the wood.
any advice out there for this newbie??
thanks for your guidance.

I start all my bowls centre to centre: use your head and tailstock centres. You could use them just to turn a tennon and then chuck up the blank. I often turn the outside and most of the inside if I can get access. I have never used a worm screw. It might sound off-putting but the blank is held nice and secure. Failing that you can use a glue block. I have several sizes and depths turned out of plywood (to round) and screwed to a faceplate. I use yellow glue or titebond 3 to glue the blank to the plywood and leave overnight at minimum.

Thanks Ron;
another person I spoke with said to mount it between centers turn the tennon and go from there.

I know some people prefer using a screw chuck and was just giving you a way to fix your blank.

I alway start with glue blocks and between centers
