I think some of you may have noticed that I am currently not turning since I've asked others to turn for me...there are two reasons for that. One is that I wanted a bit more expertise than I can muster but the second is that my lungs are not great right now and I sometimes forget to put on the respirator. My last cold took almost 3 months to clear. (That's what 60 years of smoking will do to you)

Smitty I hope you get to feeling better so you can enjoy the feeling of turning out some of your classic pens. But even if your not turning you are providing a great service to all pen makers... I know I have benefited from you and your services. Weather it is in products available or sharing your knowledge. I big hearty thank you from me.

Smitty, I want to offer my thanks for your support of the pen projects for our service men. Your donations over the past few months have been very helpful. Late last year, you sold me some slims at or very near cost. Then this year you and Ed came out with a wholloping offer of free hardware to many of us if we would provide the blanks and labor. There was no one holding either of your feet in the fire to force your offer. I was one of the beneficiaries of your and Ed's generosity. It is vendors, no, wrong word, FRIENDS and Gentlemen of your caliber that make this site and even our country what it truly is. My hat is off to you both. Thank you.
I am glad to hear that you are finally taking better care of yourself. One's health is a precious commodity, one that once spent, can not be bought at any price. Best of luck and God be with you. Be careful.

I honestly hadn't noticed Smitty. I didn't know you made pens to sell, I just figured you used to make pens and now you are just interested in supplies. Goes to show what I know! I'm a long time smoker too and although I don't get sick often, colds seem to stick with me forever.

Smitty I think everything has been already said, you are a stand up guy and have done wonders for IAP. I hope you get better and can get back to making sawdust!!!

Smitty, I know what you mean about a cold hanging on when you are an old "art, this 75 one day and 30 the next I finally got hammered. I wish I could afford some one to turn these tool handles!! I feel like crap, but no body dumb enough to do them around here.
Hurry up and get better!!!

Smitty, I don't know if you're still smoking but if you are and you want to quit, I smoked for 12 years (I know, not as long as you) and got a shot a clinic that blocks the nicotine receptors in your brain, which stops your urge to smoke. FWIW.

Hope your feeling better soon Smitty! I am also a longtime smoker~Every little thing seems to hang on longer~Take care and hope you're up to 'shop time' soon!

Lin,
FWIW means For What Its Worth, and is not a specific to this group like a lot of the listed acronyms are.

Smitty, If you need some done, or some help, give me a yell.

Jerry

Thanks folks, I don't need or deserve sympathy but I sincerely appreciate your kind thoughts.

Sympathy?? H&ll I was gonna congratulate you for using your noggin. You don't feel like risking you health by turning, but you still find a way to enjoy the hobby and participate. That speaks volumes to me. I hope I have the same outlook if I get to that point.

Wow !!! 60 years of smoking!!!!
I'm almost 50 and quit a few months ago ( 30 yrs smoking ) I still periodically use the plastic nicotine dummy. But I'm pretty much over it.

Now, with the greatest of respect to everyone who has suggested that he quit, I'm afraid that it is far too late for that. The damage is done and unless he started smoking when he was 3, then he simply doesn't have enough years left to get any notable health benefit from attempting to quit now.

Ok, now you can all shoot me, but I'm afraid it's true.

I truly hate to agree with anything "RAT" but I must this time. Skiprat is most likely correct in his assumption. The only improvement Smitty will probably find quitting now, his respiratory ailments might be sell severe and of shorter length. Of course, the improvement in the taste of his food just might help him get fat. It had that effect on me. Once I laid down my 2 pack a day habit, the food had such great taste, I couldn't slow down the intake. Smitty, do not let any of us push you around, quit if you wish, smoke if you don't. As always, YMMV.
Charles

I remember how the taste of food improved after I gave up 25 years at a pack and a half a day, every thing smelled better and I felt better as well I haven't smoked a cigarette in 17 years and don't regret a day.

Smitty, give me a pm and I will be more than happy to help you, you have been so giving to this forum and the pen turning for the troops, it is the leasst I can do for you. God bless and get well soon................................

Smitty, if thought that I had the skill to do your blanks, I would gladly volunteer to turn for you for no charge. I do not trust myself to do you a quality job. Trying to turn a piece of history, especially one belonging to a professional such as yourself, well let us just say, mine ain't that big. You deserve better and so does your historical wood.
Charles

Not many

Thank you for all the offers - I don't need many things turned. I wanted the Herbie blanks done because he's special and they will be my own carry pens.
Other than that I will sometimes pick up a sample kit from my supplier and have someone do a pen for me to check out the quality of the kit. I hope that by late spring I'll be back in the shop at least a little bit.

As for stopping smoking - if I could have quit I would have years ago. I have a basic problem in that I can't remember when I didn't smoke. I have actually quit for from 3 weeks to 5 months at various times but never got past the withdrawal symptoms the scariest of which was sudden dizziness and loss of orientation - when that happened while I was driving, next stop I got cigarettes. Cigarettes kill me slowly driving my car into an 18 wheeler does it much quicker.
