I've been having pain in my left heal area for about a week now and have been putting off seeing my doctor. Well the pain has been so bad the last two day I could put it off any longer. He says I have Achilles tendon strain and he wants me to stay off my foot as much as possible and to use crutches when I do move around. So cant be standing at my lathe as it hurts just to stand most of the time and it a bit far to go to the shop to cut and drill my blanks and then back out to trim them and have to use crutches.I have to see a specialist and my doctor is fairly sure I'll end up in a cast or a boot for a while. I'm a bit down about the whole thing. I wont be able to post any of my work but I'll be around and post some comments on your work. Keep Evelyn and I in your prayers that this thing wont drag out to long.

Hi Dan. Yea, This su.ks! I went to my Dr. at 2:00 PM today and I have moderate Carpel Tunnel in both hands... "Do you use any vibratory tools...." "Umn, maybe...."

Hands go numb at night, the heel of each thumb are slightly painful during the day - but not any hinderance to activities... Still... we are not getting younger, and we need to be mindful of the logical suggestions...

I won't lecture... just commiserate... It's a journey!

Sorry to hear this. I turn using a seat on a swivel, I have 65% heart damage and standing some days is a pain. I am not fast at it but its better then nothing. speedy recovery and prayers sent.

Hate to hear that Dan. Be smart about the things you do and let it heel good. I go back to work on Monday from having back (lumbar fusion) surgery. I am pain free.

I'm sorry to hear that,Dan.

Will be keeping you in our prayers, hoping for a full & speedy recovery!

Take care,
Steve

Dan -- I have arthritis in the ankles and have been turning sitting at a stool for the last few years. I can walk and stand for a short while, but it hurts.

Get a stool and change your turning habits. I can drill on the drill press, but for most pens, it is easier to drill on the lathe while sitting on the stool.

Best stools are the adjustable swivel style (drummers throne) such as those in the auto parts store. Get mine at Costco. You can unload the foot and still turn.

Dan,

I know your pain.
I'm wearing a boot on left foot as I fractured the heel and thought I just bruised it.
Walked on it for two weeks before pain got so bad I went to Dr. three weeks ago.
Will be in boot another three weeks.

So hang in there.

Thank you for all the positive thoughts and prayers. I home today resting as much as I can and hoping I'll get a call from the ortho office soon. I'll keep you up to date.

Do what the doctors tell you. Heal Fast and get back when you can. Sitting down isn't the worst thing to do.......but better to wait for awhile and let it get a good start.

Sending "healing thoughts".......be good salior.

Good luck Dan...Fred had problems with his heal. I'm glad YOU went to the doctors to find out what was wrong rather than let me find the piece of metal...LOL. Maybe one of those sit down lathes will be on order in the future? There's always a way to keep up a hobby you love...

Hi Dan,

Having "been there, done that", I can sympathize and pray that you heal as quickly as possible. Actually, Dan Masshardt, Gary and Ken have good ideas.

I tried Dan's suggestion of using a stool as a support for the bum leg but found that after about 30 minutes, the good leg complained about the extra stress placed on it.

I did learn to turn from a sitting position in a swivel stool and it was not too bad after I learned to prep for the project and put frequently needed supplies in easier reach.

Good luck and let us know when you are back to turning!

I see the ortho doc on Tuesday and I pray it will be something easy to fix. I may have to think about a sit down lathe. But I'm sure someone would say I was sitting down on the job. I'm working today just try not to walk or stand to much. I'll be a good sailor (do those words go together) and follow orders as well as an a airdail can. Thanks again for you're prayers and support.

Update

I went back to my regular doctor to day since I was hurting so bad and he put me out of work for a week. Not the best thing for our finances but I guess it's the best thing for me. There is a bit more to it but I wont go in to it here. If you would like to know more send me a pm and I'll be glad to fill you in.

My Doctor Gave Me THE BOOT

I went to the ortho doctor is morning, they took x-rays and went over my history with my foot pain. The x-rays didn't show much, but from what I told him about were I pain is and when it hurts he thinks it's a stress fracture of my heel. He put me in THE BOOT to see if that would give me some relief from the pain, it gives me a little but not as much as he wanted it to so I have to have and MRI done this Friday and go back to see him on Monday to get the results. I'm off work now until Tuesday but I know that will change as they will not let me work as long if I have any restriction on me. (For Tina and Wayne you know what going on and it just more of that). While the boots does help some it just not very stylish and it does not go with any of my outfits and when it cold out like it is today my poor like toes get really cold. I'm getting board not being able to do much of anything and being in pain. Please keep us in your prayers.

I wish you well. I will spare you the details of my right ankle and osteiomylitis. Do as the docs recommend and I wish you the best again.

Thanks John and Sharon. I don't know about that scooter, it is cool looking and it might help me get around. I don't think my insurance would pay for it. I can get around with the boot fairly well and it does help ease the pain a bit but not enough to be on it all that long.

Dan, Take care and be a good little airdale sailor. lol I have had 3 spine surgeries and its the standing that always gets me. Do what the doc says. Good luck on your healing.

Paul

I'll try to be good Paul but I'm better at not getting caught, I got 5 metal for that while I was in. I'm going to do what the Doc says.

It's good not to get caught!
Best wishes with your recovery - hope you can get back to turning soon. I always enjoy seeing your creations.

Another update

Went back to the ortho doc this afternoon and got the results of the Mir it was negative. That really frustrated my doc because of were the pain is. He still feels that it a stress fracture and want me to stay off it for at least another two weeks but I was hinting at a month. I'm thankful I don't have to be in a cast. I'll have to make the best of things.
