One must use all available resources for anything related to woodturning. Yesterday, I spent some time watching some videos on sharpening and correct use of a skew. Well, it worked. I went down to the shop after lunch and put a piece of wood on the lathe. It is a soft wood and started to be an ornament. Gearing up, I found the bevel and slightly turned the handle to start the cut. Viola! It worked. I then got brave and turned four blanks from square. Worked like a charm. However, I did learn that a skew takes off a lot of material so one has to stop and measure with calipers more than with the spindle roughing gouge. A couple were undersized but will see how it pans out after finishing and assembling. Thanks to all who have shared my post and those on the resources site.
