I had a nice day on Saturday when I entertained my Sister and her husband by teaching them how to turn pens! I started with a quick talk about how most pens had common elements of construction, and showed them some common styles of pens. I let them pick what style they wanted to start on, and they picked the Slimline Streamline kit. We went out to the shop and picked the wood for five pens, cut it, drilled it, and then glued in the tubes using five-minute epoxy.

Then I started him on my Oneway 1224 and her on the Jet MiniVS. He made three pens, one from Morodo and two from Russian Olive. She made two pens, one from curly maple, and one from a nice blue and white plastic. After helping them quite a bit on their first pens, I kind of let them alone on their next pens, and they did just fine. While hanging around I managed to drill out a nice amboyna blank for a new shop pencil I hopefully will turn next weekend. We sanded through 600, then all the way through micro-mesh, then did a simple friction finish, which they were fine with. I had ordered in some nice fresh CA in case they wanted to try that as a finish, but not this time. They were very happy with their pens, and we had a lot of fun, so it was a good day! And of course, it didn't happen because I didn't get any pictures (but I'll remember the smiles!).

Scott.

That's great Scott. Glad to hear they enjoyed turning. I haven't found anyone in my family who really cares how pens are made. But, they seem to like them when one is offered.
