I've been lurking here for about two months now and finally am getting around to sending out a greeting. I stumbled upon IAP by doing a Google search for finishes and WOW!!! I hit the jackpot!!! I've spent countless days reading tons of posts and all I can say is, "I'm hooked!!!" I have over 60 threads that I've subscribed too. I've never turned a pen before and only have a coupla hours under my belt turning wood. (I made two handles for some P & N gouges I bought.) You guys do amazing work!!!

No, about every three months. Lots of pens to look at, usually a demo of some kind and a blank exchange. It's a great group of folks, even Robert - hope you can join us.

John, Welcome from Japan - from a MS guy! You have plenty of reading subscribed to but I will give you a tad more that might help with things outside of "finish".

Below are links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.

Things I learned today:

Buy more then one kit.
Buy extra tubes.
Make sure the extra tubes are for the right kit.
While a magnifying glass helps, your fingers can REALLY feel any bumps and dips.
Learn how to use a skew no matter how much it kills me.

Cocobolo with 10 coats of CA buffed with plastic polish. Better known as the "Grub Method." This is the first pen I've ever turned! Only took me 6 hours today. I've got to learn to take pics.
