New tube-in material!

It's been a very long while since I posted, but it was time to share my latest creation!

This new material I'm working with is called "Dichrolam". It can be a bit finicky but once you get things dialed in and understand some of it's secrets, casting it properly has a major reward! It adds a depth and color like I've rarely seen. This specific color combo is called "Fire Burl, "Purplized". Is it pricey? Very much so, but the end results are worth it.

This particular pen is the "Da-Vinci" offered by The Woodturning Store ( https://www.thewoodturningstore.com/pen-making/pens-pencil-kits/da-vinci-kits/ )
and pairs up nicely with the blank. I pressure cast the blank with Alumilite Clear Slow Set.

I haven't perfected my casting techniques to the "extremely reliable level" quite yet. It's a very tricky material and somewhat pricey. A 3"X5" piece of it costs around $30.00, which works out to about $2.00 a square inch. Figuring out how to cast it using Alumilite Slow Set has been a somewhat expensive adventure, to say the least!

I have three more colors that I will be posting soon. Dichrolam is unbelievably beautiful! and all the credit for its creation goes to John Blazy. You can follow him on Instagram @john.blazy_dichrolam_llc. He is brilliant!

Mark, when I buy vintage materials, for example cellulose acetate, I usually look at the price per inch cost. Even at $5 per inch, that's only a $25 blank. IMO that's a good price for high end material. Knowing your products, I have purchased many blanks from you. I would not hesitate.

Once one has purchased fordite or mammoth molar, a $25-$50 pre-tubed blank is not a big deal.

Looks good Mark! I bought a small piece of that a little while ago wondering how it might look but haven't had the shop ready to play around with it yet. I was worried about the seam but from looking at yours, there's enough visual character to draw your attention away from it. Nice work!
