I just got back from OK where I was settling my father's estate. I brought home his bandsaw. It is a 1948 Rockwell/Delta 14" 28-205 metal/wood bandsaw that I learned to use at my grandfather's knee when I was about ten years old.
When my grandfather died, somehow the upper and lower wheel guards were lost, along with the pulley cover. I was able to find the wheel guards, but am still looking for a cover for the pulleys. Because it is the metal/wood model, it has three pulleys, so takes a deep cover compared to the wood only saw.
I want to put a riser kit on it. (My 14" Ohio Forge bandsaw doesn't have a riser kit available, so I can only saw pieces about 5" thick.)
It has the original 1/2 hp motor. Is this motor heavy enough to handle 10 or 11 inch slabs of wood? (I have all this mulberry, you see!) I know it has been used with a riser kit because there was a big box of blades that came from my grandfather that includes some used 105" blades. (The riser kit must be hiding out with the wheel guards somewhere.)
I know that this saw is considered one of the best ever made, and I would like to find all original equipment for it if I can.
I can hardly wait to get it up and running again. I used it at my dad's about 2 years ago to cut up some texas ebony logs. I hauled them all the way to OK from AZ in the trunk of my car because at that time I only had a little 3 wheel bandsaw and it was useless for anything but cutting pen blanks from 3/4" wood. It cuts like a dream. Dad has been using it for years without the wheel guards, but I'm chicken.
I'll post pics soon
