I do believe that is my next gouge. Is that a Dave Peebles handle? If so how do you like it. I am thinking of either getting one of those or a Monster handle. Just not sure what would be the most comfortable.

Doug makes some of the best tools going in my opoinion, you'll love it.
I made wooden handles for my gouges,,I felt they gave me more feel and control with the tool.
You should make your next purchase the big Craig Jackson Ci1, it would be ideal for your big handle.

I tend to agree with the brand -- but I may have to pick a bit at your choice. I got a set (one each) of Doug's 3/8 gouges and find the shallow detail gouge is approaching perfect for pen and small item turning. Note that before I started turnig with the shallow detail gouge, I would have taken the pledge on the bowl gouge for the universal tool. (for the inside of a bowl, I am not changing from long side grind bowl gouge) but Doug uses the long fingernail bowl style grind on all his gouges and the shallow detail with that grind is impressive to work with. I like my skews, but the long grind edge and especially the ability to shear scrape makes one tool turning start to seem possible. By the way, I start sanding with 320 grit with either the shallow detail gouge or a skew.

I got some of the Oneway ferrels in 3/8 and use one handle. It is easier to take the tool out of the handle for grinding with long fingernail shapes as you probably have discovered.

It is made of the best possible steel, holds a really sharp edge forever, and thus lasts about three times longer than the average gouge. Probably saves its cost in sandpaper alone. Which means I work faster as well. Thompson simply doesn't compromise. If he can't get the right steel he doesn't make the tool. And it's not like his tools cost a huge amount more than the other top tools.

What do you mean by "1/2 V" ?
What makes it better than other quality brands?

Don't know about pen turning - I generally use skews (one of which is indeed a Thompson). But I've heard nothing but good things about the detail gouge for spindle and finial work. Probably my next buy.

My other thomspson the the 3/4 V and that tools is unstoppable, to say the least.
