After taking a workshop with Bonnie Klein last week and using a mini lathe I finally decided to buy one. I was waiting to go to the US and get a Jet, then I saw the new Nova coming out this fall, and then after getting frustrated with their sales department ( can't really say when they will be out) I decided on this General. Got it on sale at one of the local tools shops for $540.00.
Its a 14" - 3/4 hp vari speed with reverse.
So yesterday I built a stand for it that is very portable so I can pack it in the 5th wheel when we go camping or when I finally become a snowbird.

Nice lathe - it's funny you say you can put it in the 5th wheel when you go - we are in the market for a new 5th wheel and I am trying to convince the wife we ne need a toy hauler so we can bring the kayaks with us but my real motive is to put a pen shop in the back of it.... (shh..don't tell her)

I recently talked to a man who goes camping frequently. He told me about his lathe set up which he takes out of the RV each evening, making pens right at the camp site. Not only does he sell pens, or give them away, but he never fails to meet many of the fellow campers at the site. He said that people can't resist coming over to see what's going on, and he loves all the new acquaintances he makes on each trip. I can see where that could be quite a bit of fun.
