great buy, but even when one buys new, Sorby supplies no real instructions! just keep trying

I ordered the Sorby 'mini' texturing tool a few weeks ago from Rockler, waiting for it to come in. They had a Sorby demo day at the store, with Clive from Sorby in the UK doing the demos. He was using the large tool and made it look easy, but he made everything look easy . I'm thinking the small tool will be better with pens and other small turnings, we'll see....

I got a pretty nice gift certificate for Christmas and I was considering buying one of these tools. Have any of you had any luck with these? Are they good for pens? Or should I use my money elsewhere? Thanks for your help.

The videos at Sorby should get you started. The best training tool is practice, practice and the some more practice. Using the tool ever so often will help one maintain a good feel for cutting angles. Different wood types are also a large factor.

I have not found smaller tools to be any advantage at the lathe, in fact quite the opposite. JMHO and 0.02 worth of experience.
