A complete noobie here. I am hoping to go see a new to me lathe in the very near future. JWL 1236. What are ther main points I should be checking.

Hi Ian, welcome to the addiction!
I don't know anything about the lathe you mention. Mine is a Delta 46-460. Love it for small to medium turning.

I agree on the Delta 46-460 for medium to small turnings it can't be beat, and the variable speed is great also.
