For some time now, I have been working on making my ownand now I have found the solution.
Instead of Gold or steel I decided using Beryllium-Copper.
Beryllium copper is an ideal material for nibs. It can be milled into shape when hard.
It is then soft annealed at 300ºC and easily pressed into shape.
It is then heated to 900-1000ºC and quenched in cold water to reach its hardness and flexibility.
The same goes for Titanium Grade 2

Thee nibs I will start making soon will be #8, #9 and #10 with Ebonite feeds

You can download a pdf to learn about the production process

Best regards,

Martin

Well done, Martin!

The only other person I know who makes his own nibs is Tim Cullen (Hooligan-Georgia). If you haven't worked out how to slit the nibs reliably, he has posted a few videos on Instagram showing the jig he uses to lift the nib into a slitting saw.

That is totally fascinating. Wish I'd known this a little earlier. My sister and husband were in Bern last month to visit their son who is doing an internship there. Maybe, I could have convinced them to bring me back one or two!
