Since all i use anymore(almost)is a skew, was wondering if any of you have a preference? My old Harbor Freight skew is ok but might be time to move up a bit. Also any recomendations on hollowing tools?

Have a look at Doug's line up. His tools are just superb. I dont have a skew from him yet but I have several of his gouges and they're 'the best'.

For hollowing, I use our club Rolly Munro and its taken all the mystery and fear of hollowing out of turning. Its extremely easy to use and gives you so much confidence. Its not the cheapest but Its worth every penny in my opinion.

I have a Sorby 1" oval skew. I like it alot and honestly I prefer the 1" over the smaller 3/4 and 1/2. I feel like I have more control over it. Sharpens well and will leave a nice large laceration if you aren't careful (don't ask how I know).

Alan Lacer's skews are very nice-occasionally you can find them on sale. The Thompson's are great as well-get the Thompson's while you can as he often sells out.

Ditto. I have a 1" Sorby oval and it's a great tool.

Now if I could just learn to use the darned thing.... (grin)

Cheers!

All the better name brands are excellent.
If you are able to spend more money, get a cryo treated one. I think it is Kryo brand. Needs sharpening much less than HSS.
A 1" is, IMHO, the most usable and versitile size.
I have a couple, one El Cheapo, an antique Buck in "cast steel" and a new Taylor. I use the Taylor the most as it holds it's edge very well.

I've got two Lacer skews. Their excellent, but the 5/8ths skew is a little too small. So I just ordered a 3/4 Thompaon - looking forward to trying that one.

Not, a big fan of KRYO tools by HT. Bought a 1/2" rounded KRYO skew to replace my old HT 1/2" M2 HSS skew. Find myself reaching for my old 1/2" skew. Save your money and just get M2 HSS skew. Am not the only turner not impressed with KRYO tools!

1" Sorby Oval is my primary choice one the blanks is round.

Suggestion for beter control ... make yourself a much longer handle as it will give better balance, control, and stability in use. I made my handle long enough that it now extends out past my elbow.
