Hello fellow Lathers,
Looks like I've a LOT to learn and there is LOTS of ya to learn from here. I'm glad a fellow retired Navy working at Woodcraft in Jacksonville Fl pointed me to the IAP, otherwise I'd still be using my dollar store screwdrivers to cut the blanks with as I turned them on a threaded rod turning off a lawnmower motor. It wasn't as bad after I took the blade off.

But really, if anyone just hates their carbide tip cutter because it does to good of a job, please send it to me and make me suffer.

I'm USN, Retired Chief, EWC(SW) Ron Ross. I served on ships from Mayport to Pearl Harbor and short duty from Maine to Pensacola. I enjoy all wood work, but often mistake my thumb for the 16 penny nailhead. So lathe turning has been safer for me. I build my own Computers, and sometimes from real computer parts. And I'm currently working as a Risk Analyst/Safety Inspector for a concrete water tank construction company. At 49yrs old, I wonder if the next 51years will be as much fun, or more. :music: Eagles still ROCK!

Welcome to our addiction Ronnie. This is a great place to get an education in pen making. Check out the library, ask for help if needed. This is a great bunch of people with a wealth knowledge.

Welcome from Georgia. Grew up in Jacksonville, lived at Jax Bch.
Hope you will visit IAP often and join in the fun! Post some pictures of your work, we LIKE pictures!

Ron do you have everything you need to turn? I have a cheap set of chisels I mean cheap like 10 bucks a set. If you need them let me know I will send them to you. They're a little better than screw drivers though. My son is on the USS CHANCELLORSVILLE in Japan. He loves it.

hey Ron!!

My parents are in Jax, along with about a half dozen IAP members I have met when I visit. Look forward to seeing your pens--screwdrivers make great parting tools, but have not used one to turn the whole pen:biggrin::biggrin:

Welcome to IAP!!

Hi Ron, welcome to IAP...!

Yeah, I've been there, done that and I turned a lot bigger stuff than pens with them but, I decided to make it a little more sophisticated so, my screwdrivers bits and cheap sockets endup in a "fancy" handle, as attached...!:biggrin:

Good luck...!

BTW..., we have a saying is here, "no pics, didn't happen...!"

Cheers
George

Thanks to ALL

Thanks to All for the kind Welcome(s).

I'm good for now with tools. :monkey: I do have a set from Harbor Freight, that get sharpened often(time consuming). Bought a nice sharpening wheel for my grinder, but as ya can figure it turns to fast, so I have to be very careful. Now I need a schematic to rewire my grinder and give it a slow speed or variable.

...btw, Robutacion, those screwdriver bit cutters are impressive. I was just joking about using screwdrivers. I'm already bad, I'd never get anything done with that. LOL.

Welcome Ron.

Here is a tip for you on sharpening. I too have a too fast grinder. If you make a jig like the Wolverine (or buy it), once you have your tools shaped, it only takes a quick touch to re-sharpen. I turn on the grider, then at about half speed I turn it off and do a quick touch up as the wheel spins down.

I'm not sure its possible to re-wire a grinder to slow it down, but if you find a way, please post it in the shop tools and tips forum. I know I'd be interested, as I think would be others.

Welcome Ron, you've found a great hobby and location. Here's a solution to your hammer and thumb problem --------------- HOLD THE HAMMER IN BOTH HANDS ----------- eliminates hitting the finger/thumb .

Wecome from Tampa.don't worry about the sreed of your grinder,I'v been sharping tool close to 50 yrs on high speed grinders.I have a slow speed also, but just use a light touch on the HS and you will be fine. The only reason I got the slow speed was that the price was right 55.00 bucks and it has the 8" wheels on it.
