Hello,
I'm a new member of IAP. My name is Nicolas, I'm a french artisan pen maker.
I turn pens since 5 years.
I discovered urushi finish since 2 years.
I show you today an african blackwood ( grenadille) pen with fuki-urushi finish.
The section is wood. I have turned the brass fittings on my wood lathe.
I hope you'll enjoy I had o lot of pleasure to do this pen.
All comments are welcome.
Thank you.
Nicolas.

Thank you Ron
Fuki-urushi finish needs raw japanese urushi lacquer. The lacquer is applied on the wood and wiped off. A very thin layer stays on the wood. The lacquer is then cured in a box with 75% constant humidity for 24h. Each layers are polished after curing. This process is repeted about 7 to 12 layers.
I'm a beginner in urushi i make Some errors but i try to progress everyday.
Sorry for my bad english.

Hi Nicolas,

Thanks for the reply. From the pictures it seems that the final finish is more muted and softer than the CA finishes. How about durability and does it darken with age?

Welcome aboard. Glad you found our site and will jump in and be a part of our group. That is a nice pen and the finish is one that is admired here many times. Few people are able to do this which makes it a great finish to admire.

Hi Ron,
Sorry but I don't understand the term "muter".
If I compare urushi to CA, I think that you can have about the same gloss. But the urushi is thinner so more transparent. Urushi color a little the wood. CA is totaly uncolored. Japanese origin lacquer becomes clearer with time.
With your eyes the difference is in the color and the thin.
With your fingers, when you touch the urushi, it is immediatly cold. It 's realy softer than CA. Touching urushi is an experience to live while touching CA is like touching plastic.

For the durability, urushi is done to be very more durable than CA. Some urushi works have thousands years.
I don't have enough experience to say that i have see it by myself.

Nicolas.
