New turner here. Started a couple of months ago and learning every time I make a pen. Having fun doing it. The VA here in Long Beach has everything I need, from the tools to the blanks. Looking forward to learning the woods and finishes.

And another welcome to IAP. As to woods and wood finishes that you mentioned, a special note concerning pens - pens are handled differently than large wood items. Finishes are more finicky when handled by sweaty hands and transported from air conditioned rooms to hot car interiors. But there are ways and finishes for that.

I will agree with Lee; If an object is handled on a regular basis the finish must be robust and able to stand up to the dirt, oils, and bumps it will receive in normal use.

Yup... seems like I get more from the Wood Workshop and BSing with other vets than that with the therapist.

I must say that the archive and library has a lot of great information! Now to wait until I get back to the VA to try some. Yes I know...practice, practice, practice. I figure by tax return time I will be getting an affordable lathe and not one for only turning pens.
