I am new at this so I need a lot of advice. I am not a pen turner but want to learn. I have a lot of questions. First off what do I need to get started and where is the best place to buy from. The only thing I have is a lathe. Second what about tools. Which brand is best for pen turning and are the carbide tools better? Thanks

Welcome, David, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/articles/2009/Getting_started_in_penturning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.

aah look everyone, a new guy haha
Just kidding of course.
Welcome to the work of build, spend and spend some more :O)
If you become addicted like i am guessing most on here, the question should be what don`t you need.
You could probably get almost everything from the vendors on here, of which I have not had a problem that was not quickly taken care of.
For example, I was missing some stuff on an order from Indy Pen Dance ( love them guy and gals) within 10-15 minutes a shipping label had been printed and I was notified it was being sent.

JDJ309 you are going to do just fine. Just keep reading these forums and you will become well informed. As for chisels, heck I look for them at garage sales and then take them home, sharpen and go to work. Now then there will be a few who say my work looks like it too, but what the heck. It is fun and I compete well.
A big welcome from John Grden, Conroe, Texas, Montgomery County, birthplace of the Texas Flag.
