I should have done this when I joined the site, but just now getting to it. My name is Jared and I started turning pens in July. Before May or June I had no idea these kind of pens were even around. A teenage boy I know was making them and my wife found out about it and was facinated with all the different options and she had him make one for her. He moved out of state in August, so I never was able to work with him on them.

My wife suggested we go to our Local Woodcraft store and talk to some of the guys there. We did and I thought 'I can do that'. Before this I put $200 aside for a new cell phone that was coming out that I wanted. I checked out some places to get an idea of what it would cost to buy a lathe and a few things i thought I would need. I found a lathe at HF for $110 with the thought of 'if I don't like doing this, it's not that big an investment' Needless to say that $200 for the phone went to getting started making pens....and I still have the same cell phone.

It's been a lot of fun so far. I can't wait to continue to learn more. So far we have been mainly selling to coworkers and friends. Sold a couple on ebay...seems like a hard place to sell and make more than $5.

Anyway just thought I would formally say hi. Thanks for everones help sofar.

Jared

Welcome Jared. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your work.

I'm putting a few links in here for reference –
This link has postings by different pen turners on what they wish they had known earlier:
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=46654

This link tells of some "out of the box" tools/aids for pen turners http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=66178

This one is a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't. http://content.penturners.org/articl...9/Acronyms.pdf

Nice to see another new face - welcome to the addiction Jared!!! I think you will find IAP is a very friendly place and many people will be more than willing to help you find answers to whatever questions you have (if you haven't noticed that already.) This is a great site for learning as much as you want or need to about the art of pen making.
