So I finally got the money together to get a new R-8 insulated door installed on the garage/shop. Currently the one that is on there was dented by the previous owners of the house and you could see inside the garage looking at either side of the door lol. So my heater was obviously not doing much. I am getting a Wayne Dalton door installed on the 2nd. I can't wait! Although it isn't a super high rated insulation it will fit my needs. Now all I need to do is get some insulation put up in the ceiling rafters to help, and replace the plexi-glass windows with some glass block.

I will post before/after pics once it is done.

Lowes sells a garage door insulating kit if you want to add some more R value to your new door. I have seen them many times but never priced one.

Actually according to the Lowes site, the region I am in they recommend an R value of 5, so 8 should be good for my door :)

Back in late November I had Overhead Doors in Atlanta remove two garage doors and replaced the both with steel, R19 insulation, and no windows. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this was a great decision.

I paid $1550 for the install, removal of the old doors, lifetime guarantee, AND I will be taking a tax credit of $1500 on the home improvement ... guess I got them almost for free. The house is much warmer, the basement is much more secure, and me and my fat cat are very happy.

I replaced our two car garage door at our place with the proper insulated door and with the right windows. What a difference, My garage never freezes no matter how cold PA gets. Carl

Over the summer I replaced a pair of old garage doors with the 1/4" masonite panels that I had insulated with an R19 steel door. Now despite daytime temperatures much lower than normal, the garage with a small oil immersion heater is warmer than the basement.

I gotta be a misfit

I must be a misfit....I think I'm the only guy in IAP who uses the garage to keep the cars in. Try it, it's great, particularily on rainy days.

Naw your not the only one, I keep my cars in my garage, along with everything else, all the wood working tools, metal working tools, the bikes, etc. etc.... Oh and the better halfs Christmas stuff. Here is a pic from about a year ago.

Usally takes me an hour to pull everything out and set it up as a shop before I can start working.

We do keep our cars in there, the garage is big enough to set up tools around the walls and be able to work with both cars in the garage. It's only when I need to run big boards on saws / planers that I need to move a car out of the way.

could keep some cars in mine, but being detached, i would get wet before i made it to the house ( if it was raining ). its on a small hill ,that get slick ,so it is good for what i use it for . but 20 x 30 is a little over kill just for pens
