Some of you know how I struggled with immense pain this year. Finally I got meds that keep the pain at bay and let me turn. Well about 1 week ago I started having a new pain on my back, left side just above the waist line. Pain shoots through the area making it tough for me to walk for very long or to stand. Sleeping at night has been a real challenge too. I had this once before and it was almost throwing my back out carrying a desk that fixed it. I volunteered to turn two pens for a less than fortunate couple that an old friend has been helping out for the holidays. How sad I was today to go out to cut and drill the blanks only to find myself so stiffened up and pain shooting that I am starting to doubt my ability to turn these pens. I told my wife today I am going to probably need her help. I am praying that I can just get them done for this couple. Its not much, but it is something I want to do. I always have enjoyed giving with this hobby of mine, although sales don't hurt, the giving has always made me feel good.

Not sure really why I am posting all of this here, perhaps so others can share with me how they can relate. It is disappointing to discover something I enjoy doing so much might cause me too much pain right now. I took muscle relaxers yesterday just so I could go visit my nephew in jail and then walk around Winterfair. I was out of it most of the day and even then the pain was there.

I think I might still try to turn since both these blanks are inlace and I don't want my wife to feel guilty should they blowout on her. I am hopeful if I take it nice and slow I can get a pen or two turned out this week.

Having been through 14 surgeries, last one for cancer, and the associated crap with that...I'd be happy to give you a rest and turn the pens for you Todd. Toss it up to the season of Joy!!

Bruce that is the same area I live in. I am over in Hamilton Meadows. I am going to see what I feel like tonight when I get home from work and if I am in too much pain, I might IM you since you are the closest one to me.

Thanks to the others who have offered their help to me.

Well to my amazement I came home and was able to turn one out of the two pens without any pain at all. Thank you to everyone who offered me help and possibly said a prayer for me.

Glad to hear you had a good day. You will remain in my prayers.

Thanks Jim. I could use it. Woke up last night with shooting pain in the area. Still doing better though. I think tonight I will take a break to give myself a rest and build my snow hill for my cubical decorating at work. Won't be as strenuous on my back.

My back issue started when I was 19 ... I was hit by a car (while riding my bike) and broke 3 bones in my lower back and sustained whip lash injuries in my neck and shoulders. That was 13.5 years ago and a day hasn't gone by without pain, this time of year tends to be worse becasue of the cold.

If my back is acting up and I want to go in the shop I take an advil before going out and I make sure I use an anti-fatigue mat when at the lathe. When done for the night I have a long hot shower and take another advil. This time of year I also make sure to dress warm so I don't get cold which won't help. Most of time I omit the drugs but do the others things so I don't agitate my back.

There are days when I just won't go in the shop as I know it'll just bring the pain to the next level, I've had to do this twice in the last week or two when I should have been working on my PITH pens, this is when I get down and really frustrated with my back as I don't get a ton of shop time so I need to utilize it when I can.

Todd I know how you feel my friend.

I broke my back at work in 2001 and have suffered chronic back pain and limited mobility since. Now take morphine tablets twice a day for the pain, tablets for depression as I cannot work and tried to take my life twice and now get relief by self-harming (put into mental hospital for weeks).

Only made one pen this year, hopefully get back turning soon, keep your chin up Todd!!!

This is the first I saw this, but if you run stuck you can always let me know, and I can make some up for you in the future.
