Well I had my MRI this morning and consult with my neurosurgeon. Got to see how bad it really is. I have a herniated disc that's pinching the sciatic nerve. I took a ceel pic so I could share with everyone. The red area is the bulged disc and the blue is where the nerve is. You can compare it to the other side and see how bad it really is.

I'm going through pre-op now for surgery Thursday morning. I really hope it will be the last step in a long walk of pain and suffering. Then I'll be able to hold my lil girl without worrying when the pain will become too much to handle.

Prayers would be greatly appreciated!!!

What amazes me these days is how fast after surgery they get you out of the hospital. My father had two back surgeries back in the day (before lasers) he was in the hospital for 1-2 weeks after. My X had surgery on her back, they moved her out the hospital after two days. Her recovery was not to bad either. She moved pretty slow first week and had to wear this device that created a magnetic field around here for a couple weeks which she hated. But overall you recorver fairly quickly now days. Course was much younger back then ;)

Jonathon, Praying for you and the doctors. Don't be stubborn. Listen to the docs and let your wife be your helpmate while you recover.

Ouch! Did he tell you how many MM the bulge was? I am moving up there BTW (to Columbia) so in the fairly near future I should be able to be of some help every once in awhile if you need anything. I get married on Oct. 17th up there, so as soon as I get a job or get married, whichever comes first, and I will be about an hour away from you so just let me know. Maybe I could mow your lawn every once in awhile to take some of the load off. Get better soon!

David

Been there done that not to long ago actually. Mine looked very much like yours. Here is what you can expect

Almost all of the pain will be gone, but replaced with a different one. This new one will go away as time passed, and will not be nearly as bad as what you had

A hell of a lot of inconvenience because you will not be able to do much of anything. I am sooooooo tired of not being able to do much. This is week 7 for me but can't start PT until after doc visit next week.

Walk, walk, walk, walk. and do EXACTLY what the doc says. If they say don't lift more than a gallon of milk, don't! Period! end of lesson. I went back to work a week early and should not have.

On the bright side you will be able to hold the baby in your lap while you sit, but you will be on some serious meds for a while remember that. Your wife might think she has two babies to deal with for a week or two.

You're going to be fine after this is over!! My wife had a c6-c7 herniation and corrective surgery 3 years ago. Recovered in amazing form and very little residual pain. She gets a steriod shot epiduraly(sp?) every year and is 100% pain free.

Good luck with your surgery. I have had two done and the only limitation is the amount that I can lift. I do not want another surgery. You are in our thiughts and prayers! Again, good luck and as Haynie said, listen to the doctor...

Jonathon, I had the same problem in 2007. Herniated disc pressing on the sciatic nerve and my right leg ached from my hip to the tip of my toes. After the surgery, instant relief. Could have went home same day but decided to stay the night in case of any problems. No problems and went home next morning. You'll do fine.

Be thinking of you. I've been there and I'm sure yours well be as painless and easy as mine was. The very hardest part was the recovery. Dr. said no lifting or work for three months. I felt great after surgery and not being allowed to do anything was the worst of the ordeal. If my wife hadn't been there to keep me in check, well I wouldn't have been such a good boy. DO WHAT THE DOCTOR TELL YOU!!

You've got a good support group around you and lots of people praying for you. Looking forward to you getting some much needed relief and seeing you (back) in front of the group in no time.

It's good to get that fixed now before your daughter gets to the point where she is jumping on your back every chance and asking you to pick her up, toss her around, etc...

Hoping it all goes well and you get back to your old self in due time.Like the others have stated do only what the doctors tell you.Certain body parts we only get one of and they have to last awhile.

OUCH! I guess it's good to know what it is at least. I hope the surgery goes well and your recovery is speedy and complete.

Hey Jonathon, good luck with your surgery. You will definitely be in my prayers. You know my story, so lay off the pizza & pasta while you recover. What's that saying . . . . Oh yeah! DAMHIKT:rolleyes:

Thank you EVERYONE for your continuing support! It always means so much to know that.

He didn't say how many mm it was, that is a good question though. Now I'm curious.

Even if you don't come over to mow the lawn you'll always be welcome to come over to hang out  Congrats on getting married! Our monthly pen turning meetings are in Columbia so I'm sure we'll be bumping into one another often.

I was curious to see how much of a comparison there was between our cases Mark. I'm glad you're doing better and thanks for the advice!

I'm sure you will do well and in just a few days/weeks wonder why you waited so long. As I said, mine was 25 years ago and I am so thankful I did.

Jonathon
Glad to know Im not alone :) Although Im ducking and diving the knife!
Looks like you're in substantial pain though so the knife is probably a good idea.
Hope all goes well for you and wishing you a speedy recovery.
Regards

Thanks, Im excited to get married! I have the degree, now I just have to find the job! Once I get settled in (i.e. have a job) I would be in a better position to help. I mentioned the lawn because sometimes that is one of the first things to go unless your wife does it, but I figured that she probably has enough on her mind at the moment! So, at least having a partially kept lawn would be a relief. Anyway, once I get up I will be in contact and who knows, maybe you won't need my help because you will have recovered so fast! I mentioned the MM size because when I went in for my MRI the doc told me how big mine was and that was over a year ago. Still recovering but I didn't have surgery so hopefully that will speed it up for you!

Ouch! I feel for you! I just came off of Vicodin, Flexeril & Celebrex and that was just from pulling a lower back muscle (moving generators around during Hurricane Isaac).

Best of luck & prayers for a speedy recovery!

Good to hear that you are going to have the surgery and be done with the pain and the uncertainty of what is happening. As others have said, do ONLY what your MD tells you. DON'T push it as it isn't worth it and can cause damage to your new repair. Will send healing energy and thoughts in your direction.

Sometimes getting to the bottom of a problem is a relief! I am sure they will be able to help tremendously!

Good luck and I am praying for a safe surgery and speedy recovery!!

Let me know if you need anything!

Not a fun surgery. I had a dual level laminectomy done a few years back. Took care of the shooting pains and the inability to move my back but it was replaced by new pains...just not as bad. Mine new were mainly brought on because my damage was bad enough that a lot of muscle had to be removed from the spine to cut away enough of the vertebrae.

Best of luck with your surgery.

Kevin

Well Jonathon, not much more to be said without repeating someone else.

We will be praying for you, your family and the medical/surgical team taking care of you.
