Reported Detroit news this morning. A suspicious backpack left on floor in building, cops called in and sealed area. Bomb squad came and blew it up. Mens pants and underwear flew in all directions! Lol

The theory... Homeless man set down bag to use bathroom. Came back but his bag surrounded by cops so of course got nervous and left. Hahaha hillarious!

So someone let a bag of nasty undies.....cops rush in......get to play with explosives......get stinky undies all over......your tax dollars at work!

Question #1: Why do you leave your nasty undies in a locked bag? (Got to assume it was locked, or someone would have looked in the bag and noticed dirty undies, right?

Question #2: Will Michael Jordan be doing a commercial with this plot twist?

Scott (hmmm, explosive undies) B

Scott, when ever the police or feds find any package near a crowded area or public building they don't chance anything someone drop or left a suitcase outside the Federal building in Jackson a couple of years ago, they don't attempt opening any suspicious package, suitcase or in this case backpack, they could be wired to detonate on tampering, It's the wonderful world we live in. Since we whacked Bin Laden things will probably get worse for a while, at least that's what a friend told me, Now they have doubled the patrol on both bridges coming into Memphis, afraid some fool will try and blow one up.

Protocol is to leave the bag untouched. If it is a bomb, moving it could detonate. Same for opening. I ride a train every day and if there is an unattended bag, you can bet I won't be approaching it.

The bomb squad would very typically not try to look into a zipped backpack regardless of whether it was locked. They would err on the side of caution and proceed to make the item safe. Typical methods used to do this include hitting it with a water cannon or firing at it with a shotgun shell to disrupt the suspected bomb.

These type of operations are just part of the world that we now live in. As a geocacher, I've long since come to grips with the fact that when an innocent item is destroyed by the bomb squad, no one is necessarily doing it wrong. In this case, someone accidently walked off without his backpack. He ddin't apparently intend to cause a problem, so he has no fault. The police acted as prudence requires and destroyed the big. They acted appropriately.
