Godaddy.com Search the name you want (sometimes it won't be available even if it isn't active on the web), and buy it. Then you will need to find a provider to host it on their server, could be Godaddy or one of our resident guys (I use TFW Web Services in the Links here). Then start working on building your site.

No no domain registration is free, the costs vary from 9.50 up but they all do the same thing. There is a new IP addressing system coming soon that is going to really screw things up!! it seems that the world is running out of Internet Protocol Addresses, so they are developing a new standard, which will make all of the existing addresses inoperable, I'm not sure when this new system is coming on line, but it won't be too far in the future, perhaps a few months. Try Go Daddy for a quickie, also you could try my ISP it's 3iX.com cheap rates and good service.

Ditto, use Godaddy to register domain names. Search the internet for a coupon before you do. Sometimes you can get a 20% off .com regs with no min.

Decide first if you need hosting (which is a lot more expensive... usually around $100/year, although introductory specials can be found sometimes. I got my first year from DreamHost for about $10, which included domain and hosting).

A lot of times the hosting service includes one free domain registration in the fee.

If you buy the domain on GoDaddy.com, and decide to host on DreamHost for example, you're out $10.

I also use Dreamhost 9.99 a month with free domain name registration a bunch of email boxes and unlimited bandwidth usage , free backups , one click installs of joomla and about a dozen other systems and other then if a server crashes (which is very , very rare) no downtime .

Go Daddy and Yahoo both just sent me an e-mail fir $2.99 for the first year. That's pretty hard to beat. I prefer Yahoo because they always send me coupons for free advertising.

If you are going to need hosting too, then I would suggest, like others, that you register the domain when you buy your hosting. Most hosting providers include one domain name for the life of your account. Also, if you register with someone other than who you host with, you will have to switch the domain name servers which, if you are not website savvy, could be a little hassle.

The other option is that if you do register with one registrar and then get hosting that give a fee domain name later, you could always use the free one to buy the .net version (or other extension). Personally, I own around 15 domain names now. You can also have multiple domain names go to the same website. I have turntex.com, turntex.net, cactusblank.com, cactusblanks.com, cactusknife.com, and worthlesswood.com all going to Turntex. Doing this can also help your google rankings.
