I am a new wood turner and a new member of IAP in No Colo, (Ft Collins) and, absolutely, new to Forums. In fact, this my first attempt to use one.
I am aware of the man in Loveland who has tree stock in his yard. I have a small stock of locust wood with some wonderful grain which was originally given to me as cut, but not split, firewood. I am trying to find some way to have it sliced in 3/4" slabs so I could use it for pen turning blanks.

Would appreciate any and all comments.

I cut logs into slabs on my Jet band saw---up to 5" or so. If it is larger, I split it with an axe and them it goes on the band saw. I would cut the slabs larger than 3/4" at first to allow for warping while drying.

A couple things you may want to look at. How badly is the wood checked? If it was inteended for firewood, it was probably never sealed and could have some checking that will reduce the amount of pen blanks you can get out of it. Secondly, how dry is the wood? Wood that is to be used for pens should be good and dry, so if the wood from the guy in Loveland is green, it may need to dry before you use it for pens.
