I got a bandsaw from my buddy with no blade. It is old and he doesn't remember what size it is. How can I find the size? I was thinking of wrapping a tape measure around the rollers (like you measure your waist size).

I would place the blade release in the tension position, wrap a flexible tape around the path of the blade and be sure it is in the guides. The place where the end meets the tape should give you a good read on length. Once you get a good length, go to:

and check out the woodslicer blades. I have had excellent results with these blades. Of course YMMV.

Do you know what is the size of your saw? Often it is the diameter of the wheels the ban goes around. I hope this idea may be of use. That is where I would start.

Mike -- even very very old bandsaws have manufactures and model numbers. The band saw blades, while they can be custom made, probably are available in the size that will fit your machine. If you identify the make, model, and the diameter of the wheels, any of the supplies will get you a blade that is within the adjustment range.

There is old and there is very old. Any bandsaw made in the last 40-50 years is pretty easy to rehab. Those in the 40+ may be a challenge for parts and manuals. There are sites for old tool restorations --

Most important is getting some information on setting up and checking the alignment of the wheels and the cleaning and prep of the guides above and below the table. Most old saws that get passed along do so with a challenge or two or three that need to be overcome.

If you use the manufacturer/model number research method, make sure the saw hasnt had a riser block or other modifications to it!

A great double-check is measuring!

Suffolk Machinery is having a sale on Timber Wolf blades. Buy 2 and get 1 free, the sale ends 2/28/11. I have been using them for years and don't think that you can find a better blade, great people to deal with too.

Mike,

There is a local shop that can make blades for you. SureSet Saw in Chesapeake. All you need is the length. They have all styles of blades from the BiMetal to standard Carbon Steel. They are good and you support a local busines.....

Give me a call, I may be able to help with the sizing.

As Charles said, the Woodslicer blade from Highland Hardware is as good as they come. AND they make custom sizes for the same pricing as standard sizes.

As others have said depending on the diameter of the wheels the blade sizes are unversal. If it is real old or has an odd size wheel then you need to measure. Any good supplier should be able to cross reference it if you can tell them the make and model and the wheel diameter.

You might also check with Ellis Mfg.... they also make custom made band saw blades... most of their blades are for metal cutting, but I'm told the flex back blades are good for wood.... you may have to call them as I don't think they have a sales sheet on line.... No affiliation or relationship to the company... just same name.
