Have you ever been so tired that you just can't function? I have been going through a lot over the past few months and have had my schedule full enough thatb sleeping has become a luxury. But after looking at an agreement I signed on Friday to do a few pens for someone, I have decided to schedule in sleep time from now on. I usually will not take large orders for pens as it gets boring and tedious to me. Friday I gave a guy a price on turning some pens for him for his companies customers, somehow I misread the agreement and am happy that I always give a price per piece and not per job. I thought I had agreed to make 25 pens for them but as I reread the paperwork today so I could be sure I had the parts I needed, I found an extra zero on the order, yep thats right, I signed on for 250 pens. This was looking bad for me but I called the customer(also an old friend) and told him that I was going to give him a free upgrade on his order. Instead of 250 Slim lines, he is going to get 250 Sierras. While they will cost me a couple extra dollars a kit, the work is cut in half on the turning end so I will come out okay. I know, things could be worse...like no orders at all, but sometimes a big order is just as bad as none. Too tired to do much more and am going to hit the sack early tonight so I can be up at the crack of dawn to get these made. I am going to have to set my hammock up in the shop or at least my Air-chair so I can get some rest sometime.

Just be careful in the shop my friend..... i avoid my workshop when im tired... seems to be inviting trouble.
 
Wow... Good luck with that order - and for 250 pens, REALLY smart move upgrading to a sierra! The different in part cost will be pretty small when you consider you are using 1/2 the blanks and should be less than 1/2 the time (both because of the 1 vs 2 blanks and because slims need to be turned thinner!

You'll be much happier overall, but wow thats a lot of pens at one time!
 
I was curious how long you estimate that will take? I can't even imagine make 250 of the same pens...Wow!

Are they all the same wood,design and is it a ca finish,or friction?

I hope you will post a pic of the lineup before delivery!

Would that set a record here on the IAP?

Wow, I can't imagine doing 250 of the same pen. Hate to say it, but that would take an awesome hobby and turns it into drudgery for me. I made perfume atomizers all day yesterday (15), and by 7pm when I got done, I was so bored I made a few pens just to have some enjoyment.

Good luck. A GREAT order business wise, so I hope it works out.

One of the best moves I had made for a while was buying a duplicator setup. I turn the barrels about 1/10th of an inch over and then transfer them to my regular lathe. This should cut my time down considerably. And no, this is not a record size order, I have done larger ones in the past and that is why I usually have a 50 piece limit now.I figure each pen will take about 15-20 minutes from duplicator to hand turning to size, to putting on a finish, to buffing. Then I will get an assembly line going with pressing them together, again a time saver with the sierra over the slimline. I am making them out of several different woods and will have all the blanks cut and drilled by shop close tomorrow. Alway fun to do a lot of repetative motion for a week or so. This at least gives me the excuse to blow off Thursday with the family....LOL I love the holidays..I love the holidays...I love the holidays...How many times do I have to say that before I actually believe it?
