I need to make a 3 inch long piece of metal with 3/4 x 16 stats that is Hollow. It will be put under some stress on the lathe.

I only have a small drill press and nothing else for metal working.

IF you had a drawing or more dimensions it would help. Are you looking to have it threaded for 3/4 x16tpi? what diameter both for o/d and I/d? Brass, steel, wood?

Is that 3/4 x 16 thread?

What are you trying to make?

You can certainly drill the metal on a wood lathe.
Do you have a chuck?
Drill bit chuck for tailstock?
Set of drill bits?

Start with a 4" long piece of stock.
Make a center dimple with the smallest drill bit you have. Just a center dimple, doesn't have to be drilled.
Start with a 1/4" drill bit and drill it out with that drill bit. Then 3/8", 1/2", and lastly a 3/4" reduced shank drill bit.
Cut off the un-drilled end.

Yes 3/4 16 TPI external threads and yes metal since it will be put under some stress on the lathe and I don't want to buy a threading jig and then learn how to use it for a one time thing. My hand wheel has those Int threads so I want to put my vacuum Adapter in it

randy thanks thats the best I could come up with just hoping for something easier

You can find 3/4 by 16 bolts commonly in hardware stores. pretty easy to cut of the bolt head and drill out the center for an air passage. You do not need a large hole -- 1/4 to 5/16 is adequate so drilling should not be a problem.

Carl Ford has an excellent discussion paper on his web page for vacuum chucking and there are others.
