My other computer (Dell Dimension 4700 series) is infected with some type of virus/spyware. Some type of XP Anti-Spyware 2011 keeps popping up saying it found 27 infections. I ran Malware and it found about 4 infections, but I quentined them. How can I remove the XP spyware program? I do not see it listed in ADD/Remove programs in the control program.

Does the program prevent you from starting task manager? If not...you can run task manager and look through the running processes and see if you can fine the file name for the program. Then you can search for that filename and delete the executable file.

Next step would be to go to www.avg.com and run their free virus program. Hope this helps.

problem with virus

Hello Mike & Merry Christmas,

Several of my friends have had the same problem. I've used 'malwarebytes' from Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download to remove the culprit .. by running a deep scan a couple of times. Then I run ccleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download)to get rid of all tmp files created by browsing and also run it against the registry .. I do this several times ..

Then I run spybot search & destroy (Spybot - Search & Destroy - CNET Download.com) ...

All this can take several hours to complete .. finally, I create a system restore point for the clean system ..

This virus is a real bugger .. it pretend to be a good guy ...

Best of luck ..

Thank you. I haven't tried task manager yet, but it prevents me from getting on the internet. Google homepage comes up but when type anything it the search bar the XP thing pops up.

Agree with Woodgraver if task manager will run. I have had good luck with a program called Spybot Search and Destroy. Download the free version from Safer Networking.

If this is something that has just started and keeps you from getting on the internet, then I'd suggest you do a system restore from a previous point before you first encountered the malware.

I would be suspicious that the "XP Anti-Spyware" is itself the malware, and the scam is to fool you into purchasing a service to have the spyware removed. That happened on my wife's computer.

Do you have anti-virus software on the machine with a valid license? If so, then you might be able to talk the publisher of THAT tool into helping you rid the machine of the infection.

Spyware

"XP Anti-Spyware" IS ad-ware, which is, in and of itself, spyware....

Read up on it here: Remove XP Antispyware Pro 2013 virus (TUTORIAL)

After you get it removed, however you do it, make sure you get yourself a really good Internet Security suite. My personal opinion of McAfee and Norton is not good, but YMMV. I personally use Kaspersky. Avoid the free anti-virus programs. They do a good job, but remember, they are free, so they don't get all the same updates as the paid versions.

I have friends that swear by AVG, NOD32, and others. Pick one that fits what you are looking for. The cost is minimal when you think of the all the data you will save, and lack of frustration trying to correct something when it is too late....

When you get it off try Advanced System Care. The company the makes it does some other security software too. I have used it on my gaming computer for a few years and love it.

boot into safe mode, then remove using malwarebytes

also make sure your system restore is turned off (or you will just infect your computer when you reboot)

That virus is a pain in the a**. My fathers system got infected with that and It frustrated me so much I formatted his drive.

This is the best step by step instructions for removing these fake antivirus programs

Remove XP Antivirus 2012 (Uninstall Guide)

I've had my own computer consulting business for 30 years and use this process to remove this type of trojan.

Then I would suggest spending the $25 to buy malwarebytes pro. It is not an annual subscription, it is a one time fee. It is a terminate and stay resident program that screens incoming and outgoing traffic and blocks known bad sites.
