I have an alabaster pen that I have always liked and am thinking of doing a few myself.

- can you turn alabaster with regular wood chisels ?
- what is the best way to drill ?

My big concern other than those is if there are any pitfalls to be aware of before I spend a lot of money and do nothing more than turn them into dust.

Thank you in advance!!!!

Bob, I turned a few Alabaster and they turn well with wood turning tools. Be aware that Alabaster is a soft stone and will have natural fusions. Also it will break if dropped on a hard surface.

This helps a lot. Just wanted to make sure there weren't any hidden hazards. My fingers are crossed.
Thank you!

When asked which lathe is the best for turning stone, the most common answer is "some else's!" Use really good dust collection to keep the stone dust from the bearings, and your lungs. As mentioned, the natural fissures are the big problem. Lots of thin CA all through the turning process.
