Hi Everybody!

I have been talking to Russ's wife, Gerry, and she says she and her neice are working on filling orders for his videos. One problem they have is that the computer Russ used to burn his DVD's, and which has all the video files on it, is password protected, and Russ probably died with the password only in his head. She says they have masters of most of his videos, but so far can't find a master for the "Finishing Secrets" disks. There are three disks in this set, and then there is a "Finishing Secrets for Pens" as well.

If anybody has these DVD's, we would really like to borrow them so we can make some more and fulfill some orders. Let me know.

Scott.

She might try logging in the computer as "administrator" instead of the usual login, which with any luck COULD BE without password. These videos are FAR TOO VALUABLE to lose!

Which password is missing? If its a hard drive password that you enter just after you turn the PC on, then things get really "difficult." However, if its the WINDOWS password... you might just be in luck.

1) Boot the PC in safe mode.
2) When the login screen comes up, type "Administrator" (without the quotes) for the username, and leave the password completely blank.

As long as Russ didn't change Adminstrator account password, this method will allow to login, and then change his password, or create a new user with its own password.

I had to do this on an older laptop that my Dad donated to us over the holidays!

Good luck!!

Andy

What ended up being key for us, was to boot in safe mode (to do this press and hold F8 key when powering up... the version of windows we were using didn't allow us to login as Administrator in normal mode with a blank password... but in safe mode it works!

Pull the hard drive out and install it in another computer as the second drive. You should have access to all files on the drive. Just make sure you do not install it as the MASTER drive.

If you need more assistance with this, send me a PM.

Scott... If they can't get past the passwords - send me a PM.. I can't help with any of the videos, but there is a REALLY strong chance that I can help get past the password issue, even if the above don't work. I have some other advanced techniques to get files off when people lose things or forget passwords.

Its always been said with computers that short of hard encryption, the only real security is physical security (in other words if someone with skill gets their hands on the hardware, passwords won't save you).

Easily pop the hdd into another unit as a secondary drive. Go into the volume of the drive once booted into a Windows XP Pro or Vista system and you can assume ownership of the contents of the 2nd hdd. It changes all the existing user and permissions to your control. The process can take a while as it has to handle each file/folders permission settings. Done this many times on backups/recoveries from hdds that I needed to save files from.

Thanks for the follow-up Scott. I appreciate your helping the family out with this. I'm one of the ones that ordered the 4 dvd (2,3,4,5) set off the web site.

Hi Everybody!

Thank you for all the suggestions! I have passed these along, and hopefully we will soon be good to go. I am hampered by the fact that Idaho is a LARGE state! I may live in the same state as Gerry, but I am still a good 400 miles away, so all of this has to be done by phone and E-Mail.

I am talking with Gerry's neice, and she will go give these a try. I do have the Finishing Secrets DVD's on their way to me now, so that is good, but we may still need a copy of Russ's "The Slim-line Pen" video, so if anybody has that, please let me know.

Thanks again!

Scott.
