For those of you who are always looking for native Texas woods to turn, here is some you may not have thought of.
First is Ephedra torreyana, common name Torrey Jointfir, sometimes mistakenly called Mormon Tea. It has a very orange color to it, very deep bark, and dark striations throughout. It grows as a bush here in west Texas and I have a few to clear. I only get 3 or 4 blanks per bush so they are not too common. You should wear a powered respirator when turning this wood. I have a few to sell at $4.00 each plus shipping.
Next is Wild Plum or Sand Plum. Very good coloring, almost like Red Cedar. $2.00 each.
Mesquite with Mistletoe is always a good seller. Mistletoe is a parasitic plant that invades Mesquite and produces wild color changes. In addition to the normal chocolate to cinnamon brown of the Mesquite, you get very light to very dark swirls throughout. It is hard to get a good sized blank though, so I only have a few and they are $8.00 each. ALL MESQUITE/MISTLETOE SOLD!
Gum Bully is next. This tree grows very straight, and has an open grain pattern similar to Palm wood, but tighter and always light in color. $2.00 each.
Wild Plum or Sand Plum is my last one. The coloring is similar to Red Cedar bu without the smell. $2.00 each.
I tend to cut all my blanks oversize, at least 1" X 1" X 6" if possible. Let me know if you have any different size requirements. I take PP or checks, and mail out once a week. PM with questions. Thanks
