My Version of Oland Tool

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well got busy this weekend and built my version of the Oland Style Tool.

Shaft is 14" - of L12 Steel .625 in dia.
Handle is Maple 1 1/2" with a 1" - copper ferrul and is 12" long.
Tool Bit is a 1/4" by 2 1/2" HSS
Shaft is held by 2 - 10-32NF Grub Screws

Was only able to use it to turn a little piece of trash pine (chuck of 2x4)
and at least for spindle turning it works great. Can't wait to try it for hollowing both a bowl and end grain. Any who see the pics:

The rod is a 5/8" piece of 12L14 steel round bar. I cut to legnth, faced the ends and cut a small bevel. I then center drilled the stock and drilled to depth with a "S" letter size drill.

The cutter head is a standard 1/4" HSS blank lathe bit 2 1/2" long, that I ground to 45 degree's and then put a small rounded edge on the cutting face. Took me about 1 hour to grind the cutter the way I wanted. Neat part is that I turned on end the way I said above and last night ground the other end to a kind of finger nail grind with a more pointy profile with slight sweep back wings. Two 10-32 NF grub screws hold the cutter to the shaft.

I did forget to mention that I have a small metal lathe and milling machine, so I had no problem with the metal work. But, could have done the same with, hand files and a drill press.

The handle is a piece of hard Maple I turned to the shape I wanted for a tool handle. The ferrule is piece of 1" dai copper tubing cut to the tendon so it is a modrate 'Tap On" fit.
