Well, after accumulating many of the MT1 parts, centers and chucks for my Wilton 99177 mini VS lathe, it is going to be growing up so to speak. I just put half down on a Steel City VS mini lathe. Of course this means I have to replace all my centers, chucks and whatnot to MT2, oh Joy!

This is the reason why most of us try to convince new members to spend a little more and go for "standard" lathes, (i.e. lathes that have MT2 and 1x8 tpi spindle thread as much as possible). As you probably learned...accessories can cost more than the lathe itself and a hassle to replace when you upgrade.

"Standard" lathes also have better resale value.

I use a Wilton. When you get ready to finalize your upgrade let me know if your selling any accessories.

Charles, I don't think youy can go wrong with the Steel City. I'm not familair with the lathe but I have read nothing but good stuff about all their other tools.

I have to ask, does the lathe have granite ways

The lathes with the granite ways will be available at the local Woodcraft in December. The all steel Steel City VS, mini was/is $249, the non-VS was $199. I like the VS as I am used to it on the Wilton.

I was having so much fun in the new shop yesterday just putting stuff away and tools together- I was told I had to come out for dinner!

Well I picked up the new lathe. I haven't had the heart or time to unbox it yet. It is sitting on the new bench with the bandsaw(still in it's box) and the new(in box) cross-cut slide miter saw to replace the one that got tumbled off a bench and broke its handle and saftey trigger...

I haven't had the heart to tell Willy that he's being replaced.
