Hi peoples,
Not a lot has been happening with my tree/woods salvaging but I was asked to do 2 projects from the Adelaide guys that I have been making the casting knife handles for some time.
The knife racks wall mounted and self-supporting with magnets and or without and more recently the chopping table where most of their knife videos will be made with. This table has a simple frame and drawers made from Macrocarpa wood stained and varnished in dark Walnut, the top/chopping board was made of 230 pieces of spalted Australia Casuarina from the family of Oaks so, very tough.
The pieces are 40mm square x 50mm tall so a total area of 900x400mm glued into a 12mm plywood board, all the joints were milled/routed with a 7mm round nose bit at a depth of about 1/2" and then filled with Epoxy resin matching the 6 main colours of the resin used on the knife handles and knife racks. The process of filling the grooves with the various colours was a slow/long process where the separation was necessary so hot glue gun was used to created barriers in-between colours with the obvious removal of the hot glue before the adjoining colour was added.
The cross-cut wood top had the outer edges rounded to enhance the groves shape and then a good soaking with super-thin CA to penetrate and seal the wood, the top was then sanded to remove the excess CA followed by a burnishing/polishing of the surface.
I think it came out OK, what do you guys think...?
Cheers
George
