Hi, all -

Took a pen turning class a few months ago, have been gearing up, buying bits and bobs, ever since. Bought a bunch of small turning and pens kits as Christmas projects. Summarily had a knee replacement two weeks ago. Just now getting to where I can stand to turn, but my first solo project was a razor for my son.

First time using all the new gear, first time making/prepping a blank (a piece of pippy/burl cherry I've had sitting around for 28+ years), first time trying a CA finish (ugh), first assembly with my eBay press. Lots of learnings, lots left to learn, but I'm pretty happy with how this turned out.

Have about a dozen pen kits in the queue (Gatsby, Gatsby Grande, Trimline), and a bunch of little offcuts to choose from. This is too fun.

That came out beautifully. CA finish can be hard to get used to, but it sure looks like you nailed it on this one.
Thank you - I appreciate that. Took a lot of effort. First shot was perfect, but may have sanded through in one spot. And may have done that several times. Then got it right, only to have the glue on the end chip with pulling it off the "non-stick" bushings. Fixed that, got it nice, then may have dropped the ever-loving thing taking it off the mandrel. So, it's not perfect, but I'm still happy with the first go, and learned a lot. All good.

Sanding through is definitely a bigger problem with curved and more intricate surfaces.

The razor looks great! My first attempt was a slimline with wood. Didn't get the CA built up enough so the kit parts were proud of the wood. I still have that pen from almost 20 years ago. Now that I just retired, I'm heading back down the rabbit hole. I already have every tool imaginable, thousands of blanks and hundreds of kits. Have fun with this hobby. It sure is fun to hand someone something you made.

Beautiful work!
You might consider throwing in another piece (or two) that attaches to the razor blade- I've Ben using one for over 10 years and eventually the innards get gunked up to the point that blades no longer attach/detach freely. Meanwhile, my kit is no longer available

Good thought. I bought a second kit to make one for myself; may have to canabalize that one for my son.
