I went to a penturning class at the local Woodcraft on Saturday and came home with this:

It is made from Black Walnut and I had a blast doing it!

It wasn't the only thing I came home with... I finally got my lathe (I have been thinking about it for years and researching it for months but I wanted to get some hands-on before I actually made the leap). My son and I have spent the rest of the holiday weekend playing with it. I'll post another photo tomorrow of my first "at home" pen!

Thanks to all for the great info on this forum - it made the research much easier!!

Nice job Dirk. The first pen is always the hardest. Now that you have your feet in the water I am sure you will start wading out into deeper waters, thats how pen making seems to work. Welcome aboard.

Nice pen. Much better than my 1st pen.

So what kind of lathe did you get? And what kind are you getting your son?

What . . . . you think you can share a lathe?

Great job on your first pen. Now your first "at home" pen is going to be the most expensive pen you will ever make. Looking forward to seeing it!

I got a Jet 1221VS and LOVE it!

Thanks for all the kind words.

Ha!, I did one of those bulbous grips on my first pen. Yours looks better than mine though. :)

That is a $10,000 pen...cherish it!!

The first one is always special to look back at and I always showed mine to people telling them the price. A pause until they asked why $10,000 to which I would reply "It is the first pen I made and if you want it, it will cost $10,000."
