I have been considering the Beall Buffing System and am wondering about the motor. Some sites recommend a 1/3 horse or 1/2 horse. Which is better? Also should it be an enclosed type or open?

Grizzly has some pretty good prices on these motors. Any comments?

Thanks

Beall recommends at least a 1/3. 1/2 HP would be better. For their buffs they recommend a 1725rpm motor. For their bowl or goblet buffs they recommend 3250 rpm because of their smaller diameter. I use a 1/2 HP 1725 for all my Beall buffs.

I found (still in the new box) old New Stock PowerKraft dual shaft motor on Ebay for $10 and used it to make a two wheel Beal Buffer. It was 1/2 HP and 1725 RPM and works like a dream. It's not an enclosed motor but it's been fine for a year now and for $10 and change in a switch etc. Quite a bargain.

I bought two of the Beal Arbor adapters and had one of them re-drilled and threaded backward so the left side would stay on while spinning.

I'll post a pic later.

Normally I don't like to advertise how <s>CHEAP</s> frugal I am, but here goes.
I have 3 tools in my shop that use old washing machine motors. They can usually be had for free. The landfill is a good place. Just get the ones that have the starting capacitor attached to the side. They really are workhorse. The only drawback is that they are not enclosed but they can always go in a box or other cover. They are usually 1750 RPM, but I do have one that is 2 speed but I never hooked it up that way.
