So from time to time I look at pen companies to see where the market is going and I see where Mont Blanc designed a "Montblanc Masters for Meisterstück series is a tribute to the traditional French knives" recently. The Mont Blanc pen looks much more polished at a corporate level while I used a Majestic component set. So what do you think? I think I did mine first back in December 2011.

Here's the Mont Blanc one:

And here are the ones I did in 2011:

Any thoughts?

I like yours better - much more character. So when are you coming out with your version of the Laguiole knife?

Cheers,
Rich

And just think, you did that before you were the owner of a metal lathe. I shudder thinking about how bad you would embarrass them now!

 Thanks guys! I've got a couple plans in place for designs, but for now I've got to get some stock onto that metal lathe. I spent some time with Fred (PTownSubbie) and Jason (Jasontg99) a couple months ago on one of my trips and school was in session and I found out I was missing some items before I could even begin with the metal lathe. I have rods and rods of stock, but what I don't have is time to work the details out. I figure by this time next year I'll have all the toys I need for the shop and I'll have a polished product and display case to go with it. Time will tell

Again, thanks guys

And many of us are patiently waiting to see what you can do! As others have already said, I too prefer your version over MB's.

Jason

Sooner or later Jason. I wish I could say things will slow down in a couple days, but either way this swings on Tuesday I'll still be busy for a couple more months with heavy travel. If anything it will allow me to buy that new toy like our friend has.

I also like yours better Tim! Hopefully your travel time will decrease a bit so you get to spend some time with the family over the holidays. Not to mention play with that nice paper weight you have on your desk

Purchased a couple more of those paper weights to go along with the one you sent. I also have about 60 lbs of other stock sitting on the floor waiting to be turned into something. I'm home for a couple days after being on the road for over a solid month only to be leaving for 3 weeks on an overseas trip. I do plan to take 30 days off from mid December to mid January. Let's see what trouble I can get into, ha ha ha.

We need to setup a get together if you have that much time!

Sounds like a plan Fred! I've got to set up my new shop and each time I come home from a trip I get a new tool. Just got a router and orbital sander. When I come back after Thanksgiving I'll get my table saw and maybe a dust collector for the shop. I also have some fun money set aside for the big toy. By the time I take leave I should have a decent shop to work out of or I can make my way down to you to discuss the ideas and show some of the sketches.

wiset1, your work is inspirational and is what got me to push myself and try scalloping; but to be truthful, I love the lines of that Mont Blanc pen.

Does anyone make a kit that resembles it - mainly I think it's the torpedo ends that I like so much.

Hello Tim

I guess one can see some similarities but in fact there have been other companies that have taken a knife and scaled other products arouund it or vice versa. You did an outstanding job with your design and hopefully it has opened minds of others here to try and even expand on your thoughts. For that is what the IAP is all about. When people show a design you can be honored when it is copied or evolved from is my way of thinking. Look at the shaving industry.

I myself like to look at some of the big pen makers and see what new designs they have and take some cues from them. I encourage others to do the same. I am not promoting copying, so save the PM's and letters:biggrin:

I like the clean design of the MB and may have to try something similar. Just need some time myself and that is hard to come by these days.

Thanks for posting.

I'm not trying to take anything away from the Mont Blanc design, in fact I think it's a very sleek looking pen. I just thought it was cool to see that perhaps I came up with a first and Mont Blanc followed. Then again, if I had the money and resources they do I probably would have done something a bit more over the top with it. Did the best I could with a prefab component in a box, ha ha ha.

Nothing wrong with your thinking if you want to go there:smile: I like kit pens:biggrin:

Tim, not taking anything away from what you made but if Mont Blanc is like a lot of other large manufacturing companies, their design has probably been floating around within their company, in and out of meetings and design reviews for a few years now!

They don't create the design, tooling and assembly tools then fabricate and launch an ad campaign overnight.

I worked for a major aerospace company and it often took months just to get the principles to sign off on a design review because of all the major changes then several more months to work out the minor details.

It's easy for us, we pick up a blank and think hmmmm..... that would look on this kit and I'll modify it like this.

George, I see where you're coming from and hear what you're saying, but there was nothing easy about making these pens and keeping them together with heating and bonding issues. I hear you though regarding the floating around the company for months or years before production when big companies are concerned. :bulgy-eyes: I think I'll copy some of there designs later down the road
