I turned this pen on December 22,2010.It has a CA finish.MM and I think I put some Hut wax on it.I carried this for 2 days. Then put it in a pen case.Got it out today and this is what it looked like.I had a pen do this 4 years ago.It was never stored in a case.It had a friction finish. Not sure why they do this. The room temp in the house is 68 to 70 degrees.Any ideas? Thanks for any input.

Is it on the surface or underneath the finish? What type of wood is that? Was it dried proberly? Did you clean it with denatured alcohol before applying the finish? I can think of several reasons this might have happened if it's below the surface.

In that case, I'm with you and would think it's mold. Do you have any idea what the humidity is in your home? Since you put it in a case, then we know it is in a warm, dark environment. Throw in some moisture and "food" and mold will grow. I have read that oils left behind from fingers can serve as a food source for mold, so that may very well be the case...

This has only happened to 2 pens out of well over 100.Of the 2 that done this I do not know what kind of wood they are.The case it was in had 1 bambo pen and 1 Big Leaf Maple Burl pen. They are just fine. The bambo is maybe 6 months old.The maple is well over a year.No signs of mold on these.

Mold is ubiquitous to the interior environment, you have tens of thousands on mold spores in your home at all times. Mold can grow on almost any surface, I have even found it on plastic laminate doors. All mold needs is a small food source (dust, finger oil deposit, etc.) and a little moisture to grow. Try this to cure the problem: mix a 10% solution of bleach and water (9 parts water + 1 part bleach) and wipe lightly with a paper towel, then clean with water on a moist towel. Let this air dry on the open, not in a closed space. This should remove and stop any growth.

Not Sure

So I just attempted my first CA finish. It turned out really well except for the "haze" within the layers. Not sure what it is but it was there as soon as the glue dried (about an hour). It looked just like what is in your pictures.. Does mold grow that fast? I don't believe it is mold because it seems to be between the layers of CA.

Thoughts??
