Evelyn and I just finished opening our Christmas gift from each other and she had a great idea for a gift. I had asked for play dough to use to plug the ends if the brass tubes. She had a better idea.... modeling clay and I think she was right. It's firmer the play dough and does not cost very much. I got a package of 10 sticks which should last a really long time.

Oh Boy. I just went out and spent a whole buck on a 4 pack of play-dough. Now your recommending a better product? What do you think, I'm made of money? :eek:

Just curious, I'm guessing you're talking about the modeling clay that comes in sticks? I may just have to give it a try, what the heck, the cats don't need that expensive food, they can catch that mouse that's hanging out in the shop. :smile:

I thought about using modeling clay but I opted for play dough instead because modeling clay is designed to dry out and harden over time and you have to take special precautions to not allow that to happen. Play dough will dry out but you can rehydrate it and keep going.
 
Ed, I have been using mine over and over for about 3 years and the only thing I do is keep it in a zip lock bag, no hardening or drying out yet.

That works. Tho I have to admit, a few times I have left the lid off the play dough and found it like 2 days later like that. Not good. Also I am wondering if there is some non air drying modeling clay available.
 
Nice idea! I may have to give this a try. I've been raiding the frig & slicing potatoes for my plugs.
 
If you like play dough for this purpose, a cheap generic alternative is available in the "dollar" stores around here. It is quite inexpensive and comes in a little air-tight resealable container. :smile:
 
I'll let Evelyn know you like her idea. The clay she got me comes in sticks and it does not dry out. I have not tried to reuse it yet, I just knock it out of the brass tube after I glue them in to the blank.
 
These are all good ideas and polyclay may be what I use next.
I bought 2 sheets of base plate wax for 50 cents when I first started this crazy addiction and still have a whole sheet left.
