Probably an old question, but, is verable speed really important on a mini lathe for pen turning. I'm looking for a mini lathe, love the jet espically the newer 1220. Doesn't look like it comes in VS, least I haven't seen it.

i have used my jet mini for years now w/out one and always regretted not having a VS. i got the PSI VS motor and replaced the stock motor and love it. wouldn't go back to a belt change unless i had no other choice. makes a big diffe. once you begin to use it.

The nearest thing to the 1220 variable speed is now, or soon to be available as the 1014VSI and can be seen here:

Yes. That is the lathe I've looked at for some time. I just thought the hp and size of the Jet 1220 was really nice, but no varible speed. I wonder why? Make it too expensive to compete?

PS could have bought that Jet vs lAthe last week from Sears for $313.49 than used the $25 rebate, made it $288.49. Pretty good price.. I found out to late!

I love my 1014 VS. Paid the extra $$ and glad I did. Makes finishing easier, sanding, applying CA, everything is simpler. If you can afford it, I would try to get it. If you cant afford it, get the best you can. You know what they say, "you can cry once, or cry every time you use it".

You can get along just fine without the VS option. Many folks buy the standard models and use the saved money to buy additional accessories.

That being said, there was an IAP poll not too long ago and the 1014VS was preferred over the standard model by a factor of 8 to 1.

If you want the 1220 with VS, just be patient. I'm sure one will be available sooner or later. Probably just took their engineers longer to develop a design.

Grizzly already has a lathe like that so JET is going to have to get one on the market to remain competitive. It may be 6 months or a year so you must be willing to wait.

I have the non-vs 1220 and really like it. It is nice to have the extra capacity and power over my 1014. I would have liked to had that vs model though. I can't complain though since it was a Christmas gift from LOML.
