Any suggestions on where to get the best price on pepper mill mechanisms? I'm having a hard time believing the cost at retailers. Also, if I can be so bold, what do those of you who make them generally charge for them?

I like the ceramic crush grind style. CSUSA sells them. I believe they are made by Chef Specialties. I have never sold any mills, but I have heard the rule of thumb is about $10 per inch. Like everything else, it all depends on what your market with bear.

I have just decided to start building these...

I got some great advise from Ed to go with the kits at exotics: http://www.exoticblanks.com/index.p...rt&page=shop.browse&category_id=118&Itemid=60

I havn't sold any yet, but I like the price point that Ed suggested to me... about $10 an inch. (But I have seen others that are selling them for more than that too! I just got my first kits from him and some wood from a local hardwood place to try these out myself.

Exotics sells Chef Specialty mechanisms.

As far as I know, they do not make the ceramic pepper mech. The CS mech is stainless steel (for pepper) and ceramic (for salt). Pepper offers the adjustable grind, which I sell (at craft shows) VERY effectively. They also offer a lifetime guarantee on THEIR mechanisms, though they do NOT extend that to the "Crafter" market. My guess is that is a result of people making mills that are not straight and, therefore unevenly wearing the stainless grinder (This is a hypothesis, on my part, I have no empirical evidence or statements from CS to back this!!)

I do, however, offer a tutorial (free), if you wish. Just PM me with your email address and I will send it to you as an email attachment.

Even experienced "peppermill makers" have written to tell me they picked up a few new ideas reading it.

FWIW,
Ed

I like the mills that Ed/Dawn sell at exotics. I think they are similar to the "premium" pepper mills that CSUSA used to sell (but I don't see it on their website any more).

Pricing depends on materials, etc. but the $1/inch seems to be a good starting point.

So you're saying $12 for a 12" mill?????

HEY, NOBODY sells more mills than BARRY!!!!!

Now, I'm starting to figure out why!!!

(I made that same post about 18 months ago---they picked on ME, too Barry!!)

OK, so I missed a zero

Still, that may be most responses I've ever had to a message.

I've made both the Ceramic ones from Woodcraft, and the ones that Ed sells, I like Ed's much better, the Ceramic pones are fussy to get to stay in the hole for the grinder, and since the outside of the mechanism is some type High Density plastic or Teflon, it's a bear to try and glue it in place. A total dufus like me can do one of Ed's and make it work, even shorten the stem in fact, I'm going to order a few more even try a Salt grinder, But I'm not 100% sure why???
