My brother wants a wooden bowl that he can microwave. I have tried to explain the whole moisture content thing to him, but he is certain that he wants to do it and is will to buy the materials to try.

Does anyone know of a finish that I can put on it that will not just flake off in the microwave? My suspicion is that any hard coating (poly, etc) will just flake off with the thermal expansion and any wax/oil coating will just melt.

Anyone with a brilliant idea?

I agree the poly's and waxes will melt in the MW... if any, it would be my guess and only a guess, the mineral oil might work... mineral oil doesn't ever really dry and if he has to or wants to refinish as it wears, he can always rub more onto the bowl.... one problem he may find, if he over heats the bowl in the microwave, it will burn... DAMHIKT... and sometimes from the inside out... plus it will smell to high heaven.
