I'm looking for some nice mesquite to make scales (grips) for a 1911 pistol.
I want it to be Mesquite, because it has a special meaning to me. Now comes the hard part;
I've been all through the mesquite I have, as well as what is at my dad's shop and can't find what I want. This may be a quest that lasts for a while. What I'm wanting could consist of any, some, most, or all of the following:
Burl/swirl
2 colors, heart and sap wood
high contrast grain
interesting figure
cracks filled/stabilized with red or black (or any other color that makes it look "just right")
any other quality that just makes it "the one"
It's hard to describe what you are looking for when you don't know what it looks like until you see it.
For what it's worth, the pistol is a special gift to myself. After working 18 years as a fireman, I'm in the police academy and when I graduate will be an arson investigator for the fire department. The pistol is a "commander" 1911 with a bobtail grip, in black.
So, are there any suppliers out there that have lots of special mesquite? Anybody have some sitting around the shop waiting for a worthy cause?
