About ten years ago, I brought home a couple pieces of Texas Mesquite firewood from Huntsville. I milled them into boards, sealed the ends, and then, like a lot of good intentions, set them aside and forgot about them.

This past week, I finally decided to do something with them. I took two of the boards, cut them into smaller pieces, and glued them back together in a new pattern. After the glue dried, I cut some rings from the board and stacked them up to form the rough shape of a bowl.

A little time on the lathe, some fine-tuning, and now I've got a finished bowl — about 7 inches wide and 7 inches tall. It was a fun, challenging project, and it's nice to see that old Mesquite finally come to life. Hope you like it!

Well done Dale! Well done!

I struggle with making things out of hickory and the little mesquite I have because I LOVE the taste of any meats cooked/smoked with either of those two woods. My wife as a 2ft tall rooster carved out of hickory. I have threatened to use that rooster for smoking meats a couple of times, but a couple of looks from her prevented it.

The color is excellent and the shape is classic!

That is a work to be very proud of. Superb inspiration, and I also appreciate what artistry can result with skill with something of value that has been held for a special time. Very nice! 👍 👍

Have seen several ways to do this. What did you use to determine the angle of the cut and what did you use for a parting tool to make the cuts? Curious as I would like to do this. Again, thanks for posting the photo.
