Im looking into the Michigan association of woodturners. Do you need to be a member to go to a meeting? If not, what is the benefit of being a member?

The answer is no. There is 1 pen turner club in SE Michigan We have members from SE to central Michigan and a good group from the Canton Ohio Area. What area are you in? There are at least 3 turners clubs in SE Michigan and a bunch more around the state.
The benefit is the amount of stuff you can learn from the rest of the members.
