I am new to turning, and was wondering if anyone has ever used the mandrel saver tail stock? the concept makes since, just wondering if it was effective?

It would be a good idea to stipulate which company's version you are looking at.

PSI was the first, I think. Now, nearly everyone has an offering--some are better than others.

Just a FWIW,

Ed

Oh, WELCOME to IAP!!!!!

Logan, before I started to turn between centers, I used the mandrel saver from PSI. The first one was a piece of crap but they replaced it, no charge. This places all the pressure on the bushings/blanks and not on the rod. This gives you less chance to bow the rod causing a more pronounced out of round problem. if you are using a mandrel, I would recommend the mandrel saver.

PS: I was posting while Ed was also. Whenever Ed offers advice, I would pay very close attention to it. You might also want to check out u-tube for some of his videos or his site at Exotic blanks. OOPS, I almost forgot to welcome you to the IAP. Be sure to check out the library, lots of great info and tutorials.

Thank you Charles! i was also considering it for the simple fact that i do not have the best lathe in the world. it seems like it will give me a truer center to turn around.

I use the PSI Mandrel Saver when turning with a Mandrel. No issues with mine, works as described. Make sure your tool rest is short enough to fit properly against your work. I had to cut a tool rest down to fit once the mandrel saver was engaged.

I have the PSI & it is great & I am still using my original mandrel going on 3 years now. I purchased a spare mandrel & have not needed to use it yet so it does what it advertises.
