So I am going to be turning a handle for a fireplace poker for my brother. My question I have is this....

in the picture are those just brass or copper sleeves that are circled red? Is there an official type name for them?

HA! no soon did I post this and I find the name...... ferrule

LOL!
Jason - yep. You got it.
FYI - They can be copper or brass (or something else). And you can spend as little as a copper soldering fitting or a brass piece of plumbing or as much as the same thing but from a mail order house where they call it a "ferrule". When I make tool handles I head to the local big box store and stand in front of the plumbing stuff till I find something the "right" size. Last time I had to cut off the threads of a brass piece but it turned out great.
Good luck

I found that 1/2-inch and 3/4-inch Pex Crimping Sleeves from our local Menards store work great for ferrules. I like that they are slightly flared on one side and slightly rounded over on the other. Considering that they have a couple of holes drilled in them, I think they still make a very functional and attractive Ferrule for tool handles. - Dave

Buy yourself some copper pipe, like is used for plumbing. I buy 1" ID. The ferrels can be cut to any length. They can be polished out and finished with the rest of the handle. Mush less expensive.
That's what I used. Maybe smaller OD.

Once I didn't have the diameter copper pipe I needed, so I used part of a burnt out light bulb.
