magnetic parting tool

I have a big magnet that holds my dust collector hood to the back of my lathe bed. Apparently, I carelessly placed my parting tool on the lathe stand, under the lathe bed. The tip of the parting tool was touching the big magnet. It sat that way for several days.

Now it hangs on to the tool rest like grim death! Do you think one of those doohickeys that are made to magnetize/demagnetize screwdrivers would demagnetize it? It is my good Crown parting tool.

I know...that's what I get for not putting it where it belongs!

Check out a surplus freight/discount hardwear store. I believe what you are talking about is $2 at these places.

Where did you find the big magnet?

I think I got it at harbor freight. I think it is called a welding magnet. It is very strong. My hood was designed to mount to the lathe with bolts, but I like to use the magnet so I can move it. I have a lathe extension and turn canes, so I can move the hood along the work as needed.
 
If you're mechanically inclined and fully understand basic electric safety, make one out of an old (or dollar store new) 110 volt electric shaver or hair clipper.

Just pull it open and remove the wire, switch, and electromagnet from it and mount it to or in something so it doesn't present an electric hazard from exposed connections. You probably will find this will all come out intact as wired without unhooking any wires in the process. With it turned on just rub or pull whatever tool you need demagnetized across the end of it and it will be fully demagnetized just about instantly.

DO NOT do this if you aren't familiar with electricity and electrical safety the same as you wouldn't work on your machines wiring or motor without knowing how to do it safely.

That can be a good thing... I was parting the top off a pepper mill blank and the parting tool skated a little... no real damage, but could have ruined a piece nearer being finished.

This only works with old magnets such as magnetic steels and Alnico materials; the mechanism that creates coercivity means that they are susceptible to being demagnetized if enough energy is transmitted through the material via a shock, such as being dropped or hit with a hammer. Modern materials do not suffer this type of problem
